I\u2019m currently showing a single work in a group exhibition in Shanghai themed around Taoism.
As I\u2019ve recently developed a deep interest in Taoism myself, I truly resonate with the concept behind this exhibition.<\/p>\n
Below is the Japanese translation of the exhibition\u2019s curatorial statement, which I found very compelling. In today\u2019s world, where everything is evaluated based on \u201ccost-performance\u201d and \u201ctime-efficiency,\u201d usefulness is excessively emphasized. As a result, many people who can\u2019t keep up with such values begin to lose their confidence and sense of mental ease.<\/p>\n
If we focus solely on what\u2019s considered \u201cuseful,\u201d then art itself could be deemed unnecessary in our society. But the truth is, encountering art can sometimes stimulate the brain and spark new ideas. In that sense, art embodies<\/em> what is called \u201cthe utility of uselessness.\u201d<\/p>\n In a society that prioritizes utility above all, I believe it\u2019s more important than ever to cherish those things that can\u2019t be measured or quantified\u2014like the calm and space for reflection that art provides. And does \u201cuseful\u201d necessarily mean \u201cgood\u201d?<\/p>\n 3723 Art Museum, in collaboration with LANYIYUN Gallery, is proud to present a brand new exhibition: Here, you\u2019re welcome to share your anxieties with us \u2014 because what you see as \u201cuseless\u201d might just be the very source of creativity.<\/p>\n The exhibition opens on March 7, 2025. Let\u2019s blend our anxieties into vibrant colors, deconstruct the notion of \u201cuselessness\u201d with our brushes, and turn late-night self-doubt into artistic expression. Within the exhibition space of the 3723 Art Museum, we\u2019ll paint a universe of stars.<\/p>\n Last year, I went through a period of deep anxiety. My child became addicted to video games and increasingly resistant to school. At first, he\u2019d skip a day occasionally. But then, he stopped going for several days in a row.<\/p>\n One day, he said to me in a dejected tone: My heart sank. I was both surprised and heartbroken. This was a child who used to be so confident \u2014 how did he come to see himself as worthless? I had thought that if I didn\u2019t pressure him to achieve, he\u2019d have a happy school life. But I was wrong \u2014 it wasn\u2019t that simple.<\/p>\n I think many of us feel it: today\u2019s society seems to be pushing us forward at full speed. There\u2019s intense competition everywhere. Parents are caught between forcing their children to \u201ccompete\u201d or surrendering and giving up. Depression is on the rise among young people, and many adults feel crushed by pressure.
